I had a lovely moment today ! I was feeding the birds today in my garden and i noticed a baby starling didnt fly away when i put the food out . When i put some food on the palm of my hand and held it out it pecked away and was qui te happy taking it off my hand. This made my day as i love the wild birds and this is the first time this has happend.A l ot of people dont like the starlings as there are so many but they are all wild birds and they need to eat just like the others even though they are not as pretty as a lot of other birds. That was lovely. I agree- they all need food, even the wood pigeons which eat us out of house and home. Our starlings are very picky. Hubby's been putting out mealworms and the starlings have been pigging out on them. BUT they left the bits of my home made cake I put out for them. Maybe they're trying to tell me something abut my baking???
We had a robin the other year which kept attacking one of our rabbits. It would wait on the fence, then chase her down the garden, sometimes through the shrubs. The poor bunny is only small and she's such a gentle thing. She just sat there minding her own business!!! I must admit, it was funny.
I do love having birds in the garden.

Lovely stories, I wish we had more birds in the garden but they get scared away by all the dratted seagulls which are such a nuisance. I keep meaning to phone the RSPCA because the woman next door feeds them regularly. Apart from the general noise and fear of being swooped on their diet should be fish, they are sea birds after all. The little garden birds don't dare come anywhere near, I suspect they're afraid of being attacked. Kathleen, how wonderful to be able to get so close to a little bird. Quite an experience! Lyn x

I'm glad you had a lovely encounter with a starling. You're not quite correct in saying they aren't pretty, the adult ones have a beautiful rainbow sheen on their feathers. I admit baby ones aren't so colourful, though.
Carry on feeding!

Hi Kathleen
That was a lovely little story, that certainly would have made my day !
Everyday I take my dog to the lakes and feed all the baby geese, graylags and canadians. I buy the dried cat food, they love it ! Its the little things in life that make all the difference sometimes.

we've discovered sparrows nesting in our roof- I'm so thrilled, given the decline in sparow numbers.
